Your oral health is the window to your overall health. Some very common health issues that are linked to your mouth include, but are not limited to endocarditis, diabetes, and preterm birth. The bacteria within your mouth make your gums more prone to infection and inflammation. When inflammation occurs, it puts your body in to a constant state of attack. By decreasing the bacteria within your mouth, you can help decrease the problems that can occur in the rest of your body.

Oral Health and Heart Health

Endocarditis is a known, but very unwanted, heart infection that is caused by bacteria traveling around the lining of your heart from different parts of your body, like you mouth. When excess bacteria and plaque begin to form around the teeth and gums, your risk of endocarditis, heart disease, and stroke increase. That is why our dental providers like to offer our polishing technique prior to you cleaning. It removes loose plaque along the gums to decrease the risk of bacteria getting in to your blood stream during your dental appointment.

Oral Health and Diabetes

Diabetes is a disease that affects how your blood uses glucose, also known as sugar. The big concern between diabetes and the oral cavity is when a patient is diagnosed with periodontal disease, which has 2 phases; gingivitis (inflammation of the gums) and/or periodontitis (loss of bone). When inflammation and infection presents itself within the mouth, it can affect how the rest of the body is able to process and maintain a healthy blood sugar level. Preventing periodontal disease and managing periodontal disease can be done by routine dental visits, proper brushing and flossing techniques, along with using a mouth rinse daily.

Oral Health and Pregnancy

Oral Health can play a big role during pregnancy. It is important to maintain the health of your gums during this time as your body connects with your little one. Throughout your pregnancy we recommend visiting your dental provider at least every 3-4 months for a dental cleaning to help reduce the risk of inflammation and infection. While premature birth can be due to many different factors, research suggests that periodontal disease in one of those. Again, periodontal disease is the inflammation and infection of the gums and bone of your mouth. It is important to reduce the risk of any infections and swelling of the body at all times, but especially during pregnancy when your body needs more to supply and support the developing fetus.

When visiting us at Living Well Dental Group, we will help personalize your needs and assist you with your goals to maintain and increase you oral health and overall health. By offering our uncompromising dental health we can help you continue to live healthy, happy, and with a beautiful smile.
