Periodontal scaling and root planing

If you have been diagnosed with periodontal disease (also called gum disease) and need a non-surgical procedure called periodontal scaling and root planing (also known as a ‘deep cleaning’), our skilled hygienist at Living Well Dental Group can complete this procedure with very little or no discomfort.

Periodontal scaling and root planing involve removing bacteria and build-up that has occurred above and below the gum line around your teeth and smoothing the root surfaces, so new bacteria cannot adhere. This process will allow your gums to heal and attach more firmly.

Scaling and root planing can often be completed at one appointment but on occasion may require multiple visits and local anesthesia. Scaling and root planing is not a cure for periodontal disease, but it can stop or slow down the progression. This is why follow-up or also called periodontal maintenance appointments are so important after scaling and root planing.

The bacteria will peak again in the pockets around your teeth approximately 90 days after the scaling and root planing procedure. These bacteria will need to be cleaned again or periodontal disease will become active and start to destroy the bone around your teeth. Tooth loss can occur if periodontal disease is left untreated.

Periodontal Scaling Recovery Process

Most patients experience little or no discomfort during and after scaling and root planing.

Follow Up after Periodontal Scaling and Root Planing

At Living Well Dental Group, we recommend our patients schedule a follow-up appointment 6 weeks after periodontal scaling and root planing to check to make sure the pockets around your teeth have healed.

If healing has not occurred, further surgical treatment may be needed. Patients should notice a reduction of swollen and bleeding gums following this procedure. If this is the case, follow-up periodontal maintenance appointments will be needed every 3-4 months. It is extremely important to maintain these 3-4 month periodontal maintenance visits, in order to avoid needing scaling and root planing again.

Periodontal Scaling and Root Planing Cost

The cost of scaling and root planing depends on the severity and extent of the periodontal disease. As a courtesy, our office can contact your insurance company to inquire if this procedure is covered within their policy. For those without dental insurance, payment options can be discussed during the consultation with Dr. Wells dentist in Naperville.
